Why Does FFP Use Latinx?

Who is Latinx? We believe identity is personal. We’re not here to tell anyone how to identify. We value all stories by Latina/e/o/x creatives.

Pero, why Latinx? Yes, it’s a newer word. Yes, the term isn’t yet widely used in the U.S. (we read the Pew Report). Yes, people in Latin America often prefer the term Latine as a gender neutral alternative.

Yup, we understand all of these points.

We use the word Latinx because we believe in inclusivity. We believe our community is stronger when we are united, when we choose to see our commonalities and our collective power. Our company is a U.S. based start-up that is very much rooted in our personal experience as outsiders in this country. For us, adopting the term Latinx is a way to acknowledge our lived reality while remaining true to our belief that there is tremendous power in an inclusive community.

You do not have to personally identify with the word Latinx to be a part of the Fabian Flores community. You can choose to identify in any way that feels right to you. We respect your choice and your label. In fact, we’re all about you showing up as your multidimensional and intersectional self.

At the end of the day, we’re here for books and creatives that bring a rich dimension to the U.S. Latinx experience. Our mission is to center Latinx stories, by Latinx creatives because we believe our stories can change the world. We’re tired of tragic stereotypes. We want the everyday, the complex and authentic stories from our community. These are the stories we want to read and publish.
